Big 12 Chief Labels Notre Dame Comments Following CFP Snub as ‘Completely Out of Bounds’

During a public criticism, Brett Yormark stated that Notre Dame's AD, Pete Bevacqua, was “totally out of bounds” for recent comments concerning the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Root of the Controversy

Notre Dame maintains a gridiron scheduling agreement with the ACC and is a full member in all other sports. Bevacqua has argued that the ACC harmed Notre Dame’s opportunities to make the College Football Playoff, instead choosing to campaigning for the spot of the University of Miami.

“The ACC do wonderful things for Notre Dame, but we offer substantial football value to the ACC, and we didn’t understand why you would make an effort to try to hurt us in this process,” Bevacqua remarked.

The Hurricanes eventually earned the CFP berth over Notre Dame, largely due to winning the direct matchup between the two schools. Bevacqua additionally stated that the ACC conducted a coordinated social media campaign over multiple weeks indicating its support for Miami.

An Egregious Rebuke

Later on Tuesday, Yormark responded to the criticism at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.

“In my view his actions has been egregious,” Yormark said. “He is completely out of bounds in his approach and if he was in the same room, I’d tell him the same thing.”

The criticism is especially striking given Bevacqua’s special standing. He serves on the College Football Playoff Management Committee with the ten FBS conference commissioners, advocating for the interests of independent Notre Dame.

Historical Support and Future Rumors

Yormark further pointed out the assistance the ACC gave Notre Dame during the pandemic-disrupted 2020 season, providing the Irish a full ACC schedule and a place in its championship game.

“His behavior has been unacceptable,” Yormark reiterated. “It’s been egregious going after Jim Phillips, when they saved Notre Dame during Covid...”

Rumors had circulated about Notre Dame potentially leaving the ACC and aligning with the Big 12. Yet, Yormark's strong reprimand on Tuesday appear to make such a partnership highly improbable in the immediate future.

Notre Dame, who reached the CFP championship game last season, have stated they will decline a bowl game after missing out this year.
