Caelan Doris Included in Ireland Selection But Joe McCarthy Omitted
Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has included captain Caelan Doris in his Irish squad for the autumn matches, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.
The captain, absent from play since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear if he will be fit to play against the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.
Lock Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the first Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.
Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash are also absent because of fitness concerns, while number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery following the Lions tour.
Dublin province prop McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only uncapped player in the 34-man squad, however Irish rugby authorities says new Munster duo Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht winger Bolton will head to the US as "backup".
After facing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous encounter, Ireland host Japan, Australia and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.
"There's an exciting look to the panel and it's a chance for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the recent tour to the Lelos and Portugal," commented Farrell, back to national team duties after a break to coach the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.
In a largely experienced selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again vie for the first-choice number 10 position. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, with the two players poised to play against each other for the first occasion in the upcoming URC game at the Dublin venue.
Frawley is the additional number 10 selected as Farrell opting against selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At number 9, Farrell has picked British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer international wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a return for Connacht's Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Murphy.
Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to deputise for Keenan at number 15.
Wingers Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his national team debut during the summer with a brace each in the wins over Georgia and the Lobos.
Paddy McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Ireland pack. The front rower has been in two of his province's three league matches this season and featured in the second string's loss by the English in the English city previously.
McCarthy was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a cap.
Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those Tests, is retained, and veteran Ulster second row Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer tour.
Jack Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to cover for Doris should the skipper does not regain full fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.
The national team will meet in Dublin on the start of the week before flying to the US on the following day.
