Third Evening of Turmoil in the Irish Capital as Demonstrators Target Asylum Hotel
On a third consecutive night, Irish police encountered a barrage of projectiles and pyrotechnics within the capital city.
A large crowd of protesters assembled near the gate of a facility sheltering asylum seekers in a western area of the city.
This marks the third evening of protests at the location following a reported sexual assault involving a 10-year-old girl in the vicinity of the hotel early on the start of the week.
A 26-year-old, who cannot be disclosed due to legal restrictions in sexual assault proceedings, was presented in court on Tuesday facing allegations in connection with the reported occurrence.
Multiple detentions took place during the serious disorder on that evening, and the Irish police service pledged a “firm reaction” if the hostilities persisted.
Between 7pm and 8pm on the next day, a multitude of participants again confronted approximately 40 uniformed officers.
The first officers were replaced by the specialized squad equipped with protective gear and extra armor after being struck from various thrown objects.
Some individuals persisted to throw masonry, flares, glass bottles, and wooden planks at the officers on site.
Vandalism also occurred around the nearby transit station, which is adjacent to the road occupied by the crowd.
Specialized officers pushed the crowd further from the hotel by moving forward with their protective barriers.
A horse patrol and a dog unit were present at the scene, with a air support offering aerial surveillance.
At least one officer was affected by an irritant, and those involved in the disorder also attempted to block law enforcement cars using metal obstructions.
While the initial protest concluded without significant incident, a woman in the force was injured during Tuesday’s violence and subsequently discharged from hospital after attention for a foot injury.
A law enforcement car was also ignited during the earlier unrest in the week.
The senior officer, who visited the scene following the events, commented on Wednesday that he was “resolved” to see additional persons face legal proceedings to be accountable for their actions.
He described the disorder as far from calm and added, “This was violence with the purpose to harm the Citywest building and frighten those within.”
The head of government condemned the acts of violence, stating there could be “no justification” for attacks on officers.
Protesters were seen displaying national flags, shouting anti-immigration slogans, and throwing objects.
There were also efforts to advance on the police line using horse-drawn carts and scrambler bikes on Tuesday, and a police helicopter above was targeted with beams.
