Woman Arrested Following Alleged Medical Gas Tampering at Two Metropolitan Hospitals

A woman has been arrested after hospital gas systems were allegedly sabotaged at a pair of Sydney-area hospitals.

Event Overview

The Sutherland medical facility in the city's southern suburbs experienced disruption to medical gases on Tuesday morning, requiring them to switch to mobile gas alternatives as an emergency measure, according to health officials.

"The cause behind the disruption of gases is alleged to be deliberate sabotage," authorities stated.

Officials stressed that "{To reportedly do this represents extreme recklessness. The potential for disastrous consequences."

Law Enforcement Response

Law enforcement said they received notifications of "suspected intentional damage at two hospitals in the Caringbah area." Sources indicate that the other facility was a nearby private hospital.

Authorities claim a 42-year-old woman entered the grounds of a hospital on Kareena Road at around 12:20 AM on Tuesday and "severed utility lines, then turning on emergency water systems."

They further alleged that at approximately 1:30 AM, "the woman entered the grounds of another hospital on Kareena Road ... and allegedly switched off the gas main."

She was arrested in Miranda at about 4:00 AM on Tuesday for violating bail conditions, according to police.

Hospital Response

Medical authorities confirmed that medical gas supplies were restored by hospital teams and local health district "within approximately two hours."

"I want to assure the public patient care was not affected to medical services and that the system has returned to operating as per normal," authorities stated.

Officials further noted that "Entry to gas systems in NSW public hospitals is restricted. An investigation will examine the incident to see what improvements can be put in place."

Officials revealed that the woman reportedly scaled a wall at the medical facility and entered to a secured zone.
